An open book represents life. Learning. Spirit of wisdom.


Libraries

Paying to have access to private libraries was the norm before public libraries appeared in the 20th century.


In 1780, Carl Deichman left his private book collection to the city of Christiana (Oslo). That collection of 6,000 books became the basis of the Oslo Public Library.

Published in 1841 as a first volume of folktales by Asbjørnsen (a teacher) and Moe (a preacher). The work coincided with Norway’s newly won partial independence.

Unity. Various steps toward inner perfection. Universal symbol of completeness. Eternity. The waters circling the earth represent the cycles of life. Concentric circles symbolize the order of creation. Incorruptibility.

Creative spirit.

Dynamic forces. Unconscious or subconscious depths. Feeling. Empathy. Symbolizes life. Emotional consciousness. The source of all potentialities in existence.

Seashell

Feminine. Birth. Regeneration of life. Love of marriage. Symbolizes a successful journey. Good fortune. Secrecy.


Seahorse

Bravery at sea. Symbolizes confidence and grace.


Fish

Psychic power of the unconscious. Abundance. Happiness. Nourishment. Strength. Endurance. Secret wisdom. Prophesy. Life renewed. Sustainability. Wealth.


Rings (in the outer ring)     

Continuity. Wholeness. Eternal. Symbol of the binding nature of a pledge. Love. Protection against destructive forces. There are 45 rings around the circle signifying the number of years married.


Sheet Music (on the deck of the sailboat)

Having evolved over hundreds of years, sheet music uses the letter system A-G to represent a 7 note scale. The 5 line stave was established around the 17th century to determine the pitch.


Norwegian Flag     

Designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer. The three colors (red, white and blue) denote freedom. The Nordic cross is based on the tradition established by the other Nordic countries, Denmark and Sweden.
